About 4 km north of Düsseldorf main station, the former marshalling yard and freight depot, Düsseldorf Derendorf, was situated. From 1941 – 1944, from here jews from the government district Düsseldorf have been deported to the extermination camps. In April 2012, a memorial was established south of Jülich bridge, to commemorate the more than 6.000 jews deported from here to the gas chambers.
I would like to draw your attention to this year’s 40° Urban Art Festival Düsseldorf, which will take place around the Jülich bridge and adjacent to the memorial of the deported jews of Düsseldorf. This year’s motto will be “ BRÜCKEN DENKEN“, and to meet it equally in a historical as well as current context, will be a challenge of a special kind. So one can be curious, how the approach of the paticipating artists will be.
The area around the Jülich bridge of course always was designed, though illegal. I have chosen a number of pieces created by L.E.T. LES ENFANTS TERRIBLES and others, taken between 2014 and 2017, worth showing in view of the coming event.
