A mural is a piece of artwork painted directly on a wall, or another large permanent surface. Characteristic of mural painting is, that the architectural elements of the wall are integrated into the picture. Due to the size, cost, and work involved in creating a mural, muralists often have to be commissioned by a sponsor.
