In Germany city halls usually are historic administrative buildings. They have specific architectural compositions, such as a tower, a look out or a clock tower. We have a lot of prominent historic city halls, but I never have seen such a building like the Marl city hall before. Hard to believe that the design has won an architectural competition in 1958. I cannot say why, because for me it is a dreadful sin and as ugly as can be. It couldn’t be worse! The decision of the city administrationin in 1990, to allow to paint the surrounding walls with graffiti, was the best they could do for the desert around this building.
