In cooperation with the Department of Culture of the City, Gelsenkirchen’s cityscape is to be upgraded. To this end, a number of large and highly visible walls at highly frequented locations throughout the city are to be decorated with high-quality murals. One of the walls acquired so far, located at Maximilianstraße 2 in Gelsenkirchen Buer, has already been redesigned by MANDIOH, Berlin based muralist with basque roots.
After an open call and a sensational 125 applications from all over Germany and Europe, the jury selected Amanda Arrou-tea aka MANDIOH from Berlin for the wall in Maximilianstraße. Born and raised in the coastal city of San Sebastián, in the Basque Country, she felt connected to the sea from an early age. Especially mermaids fascinate her. She started looking for her female kin in every sea, river and pond. Mermaids eventually inspired her art style. She has left a strong message in Buer: #NIUNAMENOS or also #KEINFEMINIZIDMEHR.
