Hi Ernie – and where did you leave Bert?

I’m always tremendously happy to find pieces of pixel art. They are stunning. Classic Pixel Art is a form of digital art, created through the use of software, where images are edited on the pixel level. The aesthetic for this kind of graphics comes from 8-bit and 16-bit computers and video game consoles, in addition to other limited systems such as graphing calculators. For the use in street art, small, cylindric, heat activated beads are placed in a layer on a mat that fixes them. Then, after heat exposure, the beads will fuse together in one piece. [1]

From time to time I have found pieces created with beads, but they mostly were rugged and uninspiring and only in the last few years I have found some outstanding pieces of pixel-art created by STUESSYDAN, a street artist based in Düsseldorf. But up to today I never have come across one of those pieces in Essen. It seems that there is a new player in Essen’s street art scene. For me IAMPI is completely new, but one can see, that a lot of time and effort has been invested creating Ernie. I very much hope to find more of those pieces in Essen – such as Bert…
