Baden Baden is clean

Last year I was very happy to get a ticket for Baden Baden Gala were a number of opera stars performed „The Marriage of Figaro“. One of the headliners was Bryn Terfel, my favorite bass-baritone. Unfortunately he was unable to sing due to illness. I had hoped to find remnants of JR pieces in Baden Baden, where JR had designed a number of facades as part of his exhibition „Inside Out“ in Museum Frieder Burda in 2014. I wasn’t prepared to find nothing, and the tourist board gave the laconic information that they had removed all residues, because „it didn’t look nice any longer after rain and weather“. The inventors of „Swabian Cleaning Week“ like it tidy. I was totally shocked and quit searching, accepting that there was nothing to find!  Apart from the opera evening, Baden Baden was a total flop; I decided that I would never come back again.

116.JPGThis year’s Baden Baden Gala made me change my  mind as Bryn Terfel was one of the headliners again. The Gala was extraordinary and I was more than glad to participate – but – again and again: Baden Baden could be described with terms as clean, sterile or aseptic etc. There is no graffiti or street art to be find anywere in the city. Right at the end of my short trip to Baden Baden I found the pantomime performance artist I had seen last year at the same position and with the same attitude. Didn’t he move since then? The knitted pillar of a clock in front of City Pharmacy at Gernsbacher Straße defiantly preserves a colorful Baden Baden. I wish I could have found it!
